Let me start by saying that Google Drive is a fantastic platform and this is by no means an attempt to undermine how useful it is in business.

But as a way of managing your client’s projects, this just isn’t going to cut it.

Especially when your business starts to grow with multiple clients and their unique needs, demands and deadlines.

The key to choosing the right PMS for you is being clear about what you need it for and your expectations. Perhaps write these down first (for example: easily accessible, sends invoices, can be integrated with other apps etc) so you know what you’re looking for.

As you guys know, my favourite PM system is without a doubt, ClickUp.

ClickUp is a project management system that literally does it all, helping you plan, track and manage your workload as well as being flexible to your team's needs (can you tell I LOVE it? 😉). This PMS is robust, resilient and easily accessible.

3 reasons why I LOVE ClickUp so much:

1.) It's a single platform that has over 1000 integrations attached. It literally has everything you need on one platform from calendars to cloud storage and workflows to forms and funnels.

2.) It's the dream PMS when it comes to increasing productivity. So much time is wasted flitting between apps and web pages which is both frustrating and costly. Everything is under one roof here for ultimate ease, simplicity and efficiency.

3.) No more chasing clients to meet, sending emails back and forth regarding availability and having to use several different platforms and apps to actually execute the meeting. With ClickUp you can do everything including inviting your client to your digital workspace so they can see themselves the progress on certain tasks and deadlines.

I think my love affair with ClickUp is pretty obvious (so much so I even have my own ClickUp for my marriage 🤣💁🏻‍♀️) but I’d love to know -

Outstanding onboarding experience = consistent clients + revenue 💰

I talk about this A LOT and for good reason. If you want to keep operational costs ⬇️, your margins ⬆️ and your profits 🚀 then you need to be focussing on offering a 5* client experience.

Why?

✅ It builds customer loyalty – meaning they keep coming back again and again
✅ It establishes your business as a business that others can trust – your clients singing your praises and recommending you to everyone in their circles is the best type of marketing
✅ It sets you apart from others – not everyone offers a seamless and striking onboarding experience. Want to stand out in your niche? This is a great way to do it!

And a few more added tips to share with you...

👉🏻 Avoid information overload – It’s easy when you’re onboarding a new client to throw everything at them. A good way to avoid this is to create an email workflow that over a course of a few days or weeks will drip feed all the important information to your client in a clear, concise and coherent way.

👉🏻 Ask for feedback – You can either add this as part of your onboarding or off-boarding but make sure you offer this opportunity for your clients to offer feedback on things they liked and any areas of improvement for you to work on. This is really useful for obtaining social proof to promote your services.

And one of the most significant areas an OBM can flourish is in supporting you by project managing this new idea from innovation to implementation and ensuring a smooth and seamless operation to get there.

But as with anything, it takes teamwork, trust and time.

Here are some other top tips when working with an OBM:

👉🏻 Communication is key. Arrange set meetings on a consistent, frequent basis to iron out any issues and to avoid delays or costly mistakes.

👉🏻 Always set clear expectations when it comes to delivery targets. Even if you don’t know an exact date, create one to ensure focus and direction.

👉🏻 Never make assumptions. As the client, your tasks should be clear, concise and comprehensive. As the OBM, you should request more information if you feel like you can’t meet delivery expectations.

This was literally the last straw for working in corporate…

My life in corporate was as a Logistic and Supply Chain Manager for the produce category, managing over 15+ staff and constantly trying to meet service delivery expectations whilst suffering silently.

The truth was during this time, I was spending ALL my time working. Last-minute deadlines, amendments and emergencies seemed never-ending and I consistently felt like I was firefighting every problem with zero recognition or appreciation.

And then, when I miraculously got my first weekend off in A LONG time, someone rang me requesting I provide a bullsh*t report in case it *might* snow.

(It didn’t even force cast snow at that time 🤦🏻‍♀️).

So I started considering the wonders of working for myself and here we are. 💁🏻‍♀️

It wasn’t all doom and gloom though.

My corporate life did give me a thorough and appreciative understanding of the importance of SOPs in operations.

It helped me in appreciating strategy- business optimisations, cost saving techniques and new supply options.

It also made me realise the importance of team management and how paramount a team is for running an effective and efficient business.

So although towards the end I’d had enough of my corporate life, the lessons it taught me are invaluable to how I run my own business and support my clients in running theirs too.

Now don’t get me wrong, I LOVE being an OBM and I love supporting other OBMs and VAs to upskill and uplevel their own business operations and client service.

But that doesn’t mean working for yourself isn’t lonely and quite often, having to rely on yourself, without the ability to bat ideas about, get opinions or ask for help as and when, can be challenging.

Here are my top 3 tips when it comes to limiting your alone time and getting the help you need to continually improve:

👉🏻 Client Check ins – Not just from a strategic, efficiency perspective, client check ins opens up that channel of communication to ensure you’re on the right track with tasks, meeting deadlines, tweaking issues and building rapport and a relationship with your client. I’d recommend weekly check ins of some sort at least once a week.

👉🏻 Coworking opportunities – If you’re used to working in corporate style offices or enjoy being around others, why not look into coworking opportunities or better yet, create your own? Everything’s been taken online now so weekly zoom meetings might help to keep each other accountable, support one another and to complete tasks more efficiently.

👉🏻 Coaching/ masterminds/ memberships – The perfect way to meet other similar minded and often similar business type people. These opportunities and experiences can encourage personal development, offer support and guidance and make you feel part of a community of cheerleaders, always there to listen and offer advice.
